The chairman of the special session talks about his feelings and the highlights of the conference

Recently, the ESC 2022 conference has been successfully concluded through a combination of online and offline methods. The number of participants has reached a new height. The conference not only released a number of guidelines, but also released dozens of the latest clinical studies. , so that the participants benefited a lot and returned with a full reward. This issue specially invites ESC Paul Hugenholtz, Chair of Innovation Lectures, Professor Victoria Delgado from Leiden University, Leiden, Netherlands, to talk about his experience of participating in the conference.

International Circulation: As the  chairperson of the special session, Would you please introduce the background and significance of the topic of this special session?

Professor Victoria Delgado: It has been a pleasure to be Chairing this session, the ESC Paul Hugenholtz Lecture in Innovation. Paul Hugenholtz was an innovator and pioneer in many fields of cardiovascular disease and treatment. His legacy is that there are many physicians trained by him, and this year at ESC 2022 in Barcelona with the spotlight on imaging, I think this is great way to honor him with Professor Stefan Neubauer from Oxford, who is an excellent mentor, an innovator in cardiovascular imaging, particularly cardiovascular magnetic resonance and computed tomography, and who has trained many physicians all over the world.

International Circulation: As the Chairperson of the Session, which topic most impresses you?

Professor Victoria Delgado: My main area of interest is cardiovascular imaging. I think this year is going to be an excellent place to discover the most innovative research in this field. There are new developments in echocardiography, cardiovascular magnetic resonance and computed tomography. I think all of those innovations will have an important impact on clinical practice.

International Circulation: With several guidelines and new research published at this year’s conference, which research are you most interested in?

Professor Victoria Delgado: This year, the new Guideline on Cardio-Oncology was presented, which has an important background and cooperation in cardiovascular imaging. The guidelines on non-cardiac surgery were also presented introducing a new algorithm for the preoperative assessment of these patients. There is also the pulmonary hypertension guideline. In all of those fields, the role of cardiac imaging, which is my main interest, is significant in managing these patients.

International Circulation: As a participating expert, what do you think is the biggest highlight of this conference?

Professor Victoria Delgado: The biggest highlight of this Congress in Barcelona in 2022 is the Hot Line Sessions - there are 36 late-breaking trials presenting the latest research across all fields from prevention to cardiac imaging to treatment and management of cardiovascular disease. Also we had the four new ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines: ventricular arrhythmias/sudden cardiac death; pulmonary hypertension; the cardiovascular assessment and management of patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery; and cardio-oncology.
